The West and Mountain areas have been home to more student types looking for apartments to rent in Hamilton. While the neighborhoods are not exactly trendy, they do cater to a younger crowd that would be looking for more of a university atmosphere. Most of the apartments for rent in Hamilton in this area will be populated by students and be quite affordable for the younger potential resident.

In recent years, the North (or North End) areas and Eastern areas have been the more desirable neighborhoods. The East has more international areas and neighborhoods, with ethnic buildings and residences coloring the landscape. The North typically has trendier places like galleries, cafes, outdoor restaurants, and such in some parts as the area has undergone a lot of gentrification over the past fifteen years – but some parts, especially close to the downtown Centre area, can be quite dangerous. Efforts to re-start manufacturing are also seeking to lure moreblue-collar workers to the area, increasing the demand for housing. Apartments for rent in Hamilton will still remain fairly cheap, until these efforts progress further and the overall cost of the neighborhood finally begins to rise. For now, it may be a good time to get in cheap.

The center of town has struggled much in recent years, but initiatives are underway to lure back people looking for Hamilton apartments to rent. Still, the area has a long way to go before anyone will want to stay there after dark. The area can still be quite dangerous, as it lags behind the northern part of town in general community improvement. It is still in the beginning phases of projects to improve the central core. The area as a whole is projected to grow by about two to three percent over the next year, and if that growth does come it may help usher in the growth that city officials hope will improve the central core on a more permanent basis.
